VoIP
What is it?
VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol and basically means rather then using your a standard telephone to make calls you use your current internet connection to place calls.
Often VoIP provides cheaper phone calls then telephone providers can offer.
Broadband
Broadband internet offers customers internet speeds of up 30,000 kilobits per second(kbps) which is a substantial increase from dialup internet which is approximatley 56 kilobits per second. The exact speed that you will receive varies depending on a number of factors, of which the main two are:
Distance from the exchange
Quality of your phone lines
Broadband Options
Broadband can be supplied to you via several different methods.
ADSL 1
ADSL 1 provides users with speeds up to 8,000 kilobits per second. Inorder to run ADSL 1 you need to purchase a modem or a modem/router which is compatiable with ADSL 1. This device connects to your phone line (but does not occupy it so you can still make phone calls) and your computer to provide it with Internet access.
The Internet is only avaiable by connecting directly to the modem or modem/router unless you have a Wireless Router. The Internet will only work if modem or modem/router is connected to the phone line that was given to the Internet Service Provider (ISP) so you cannot take your ADSL with you to a friends house, or on holidays.
ADSL 2+
ADSL 2+ provides users with speeds up to 24,000 kilobits per second and operates similarly to ADSL 1. You require an ADSL 2+ modem or modem/router to connect to the Internet.
Cable
Casle Internet is a very stable system which offers speeds up to 30,000 kilobits per second. Cable Internet speeds are not degraded by the two above factors because Cable Internet doesn't use the existing phone lines and as such if you pay for a 8,000 kilobit per second connection then that is what your Cable modem will receive.
Cable modems need to be purchased from the Internet provider and as such can be quite expensive.
Wireless G
The Wireless G network is ideal for people who are on the move and can't live without their Broadband. It offers speeds of 6,000 kilobits per second and this can be accessed from anywhere that there is mobile phone reception.
The Wireless G network is also more expensive then a comparative ADSL or Cable connection
